Megan’s Law site helps ID man who approached girl

Police arrested a registered sex offender after a 15-year-old girl he allegedly approached identified him by using the Megan’s Law web site — and the girl’s story matched the movements tracked by the man’s  GPS ankle bracelet.

According to the Riverside Police Department, John Dee Edward Everage, 31, was arrested Friday at his workplace at a construction site in Chino; he was booked for parole violation and attempted kidnapping for the purpose of sexual assault.

The girl told police a man drove up beside her at Campbell and Crest avenues on Tuesday morning and asked her to get in his car. When she refused, she said he pulled into a nearby driveway to continue propositioning her.

On Friday, a co-worker of the girl’s mother suggested the family look at the Megan’s Law site, meganslaw.ca.gov, a database of registered sex offenders.

There they found a photo and the name of the suspect and provided the information to police, who checked his GPS data.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call Detective Linda Byerly at (951) 353-7120.
