Update: Man dies in shootout with police

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a 59-year-old man who’d been firing at officers on Tuesday in Landers.

According to a department press release, police were called to a disturbance in the 1300 block of Old Woman Springs Road at 4:22 p.m. As they arrived, they were fired upon and took cover.

They set up a perimeter, evacuated local residents and closed part of State Route 247.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m., a man — later identified by the coroner’s office as Stanley Musial — carrying two firearms came out of the home and began shooting at officers. When he ignored their commands and continued to shoot, they returned fire.

After the man went down, SWAT officers used a small, armored personnel carrier to get close enough to determine that the man was dead.

At approximately 9:20 p.m., an uncooperative woman was discovered inside the main residence on the property. After a brief struggle, Karena Ann Akhavi, 58, was taken into custody and booked for attempted murder.
