Deputy accused of sex crime

The following information has been provided by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department:

08119021.jpgOn Monday, April 28, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department received a complaint from a citizen alleging inappropriate sexual conduct by a Deputy Sheriff. The allegation stemmed from a contact the deputy had made with a female in the course of his duties. The investigation was subsequently assigned to the Special Investigation Bureau.

During the course of the investigation Deputy John Frank Schafers, age 42 and a resident of Temecula, was identified as having allegedly made sexual advances toward a female citizen he had contacted pursuant to a call for service. The victim advised in her complaint the unwarranted advances were made by the deputy once he went off duty in the early morning hours of April 20, and then returned to her residence at approximately 4:30a.m.

Schafers was interviewed on Tuesday, April 29, 2008, and was later booked into the Southwest Detention Center for 243.4 (d) PC, Sexual Battery, and 149 PC, Assault under the Color of Authority. He is a 29 month employee and his bail has been set at $25,000. He has been placed on paid administrative leave.

No further information about this investigation will be released.
