Alleged bank robber plows into police vehicles

A suspected serial bank robber wound up hitting a police motorcycle and then two patrol cars before he was captured in Victorville on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, a robbery was reported at 2:44 p.m. at the Downey Savings Bank at the corner of Hesperia and Bear Valley roads in Victorville.

Not knowing there had been a bank robbery, Deputy Paul Bader attempted a traffic stop on the suspect’s vehicle as it went north on Cottonwood Road.

The car stopped, but then backed into Bader’s motorcycle. He wasn’t seriously injured.

The suspect then fled on Mariposa toward Palmdale, followed by a honking witness.

Another officer attempted a traffic stop at Mariposa and Palmdale roads; this time the suspect drove onto the sidewalk and back onto the street to get away from police.

He then hit two patrol cars driven by Victorville deputies.

The suspect was removed from his vehicle at gunpoint and taken into custody after a short struggle.

Investigators believe the suspect, 51-year-old Melwatt Morehead of Victorville, also robbed the Bank of America in Adelanto on April 20; tried to rob a BofA in Victorville on April 14; and recently robbed a bank in Ontario.

In addition to robbery charges, Morehead was booked on charges of attempted murder of a peace officer, assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer and felony evading.
