Will Smiths finally reunite for Coachella?

We keep hoping that the members of the Smiths will one day put aside their many grudges and reunite for one spectacular, heart-swelling, cathartically gloomy, gladiolus-tossing, big-paying night at Coachella.

Goldenvoice, which loves a good reunion as much as it loves the Smiths, would certainly welcome the lads with open arms and a wad of cash.

So our palms got sweaty when we ran across an item in British newspaper The Sun saying the iconic ’80s band was on the verge of signing on to play the Indio festival. (Coachella is a big deal in Europe — and now that the dollar is doing so badly, it’s a cheap weekend in the desert for rain-weary Brits.)

After all, Morrissey’s new manager is Irving Azoff, who has just pulled off the equally miraculous feat of getting Axl Rose to release “Chinese Democracy” after 17 years.

But then NME said guitarist Johnny Marr’s manager called the rumors “rubbish.

Oh well. It will be enough of a feat just for Morrissey to release an album and pull off a tour with no cancellations.

We shall, however foolishly, continue to hope that a Smiths reunion happens one of these years.

For old time’s sake, here’s “How Soon is Now.”

•In other NME reunion news, the magazine says Led Zeppelin will reunite, record and tour — without Robert Plant, who just finished touring with Alison Krauss. They’re looking for a replacement vocalist, though not a Plant sound-alike. So, no, the songs will not remain the same.
