John King — chief national correspondent and master of CNN’s Magic Wall — makes one fine sinister, word-domination mastermind in this clip from Tuesday’s “The Daily Show.”
Here’s the setup: “Daily Show” reporter John Oliver interviews the inventor of the Magic Wall, the touch-screen map that King used so adeptly during election coverage, and realizes King’s powers may reach far beyond CNN.
For a no-nonsense reporter, King pulls off the dark and debonair thing beautifully — even while wearing an oven mitt. OK, especially while wearing an oven mitt. We now squeal with terror and delight at the sight of cupcake sprinkles.
It’s usually CNN’s other silver-haired, blue-eyed on-air talent, Anderson Cooper, who does late-night goofs — but Cooper has a well-deserved reputation for getting the giggles. King, meanwhile, is scary-good in his stern omnipresence.
And CNN makes one of the greatest guest appearances by a network you’ll ever see. (Everyone, including Cooper, plays it straight.)
We trust we’ve piqued your interest… and we haven’t even spoiled the ending. Here’s the clip:
Of course, you don’t need a high-tech map to have some fun. Stephen Colbert, plugging this Sunday’s “A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All” on “The Early Show,” makes mayhem with the CBS floor map. We’ve got the extended interview with Harry Smith.
