Riverside Plaza’s Holiday Parade on Friday; Performance Riverside, and your votes will help determine the window contest winner

Actress Lauren Potter will be the Grand Marshall of the Riverside Plaza’s 2009 Holiday Parade at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 20 at the Riverside Plaza. Potter, who lives in Riverside, is 19 years old and a recent graduate of Poly High School. She co-starred on the popular FOX TV show “Glee,” 16-year-old high school sophomore with Down syndrome who tries out for the school’s cheerleading squad.

The parade will reach its destination on Main Street in front of the 50-foot Christmas tree and Regal Riverside Plaza Stadium Movie Theater.

Santa will give the command to light the tree and then feel free to enjoy performances by the members of Dancers Studio, the Poly High School Band and Riverside Concert Band, one of the nation’s oldest all-volunteer community bands until 9 p.m. Santa will also be available for wishes and pictures.

Riverside Plaza is located in Riverside on Central Avenue just west of the 91 Freeway.

Riverside Downtown Partnership is sponsoring a window decorating contest. Downtown businesses are competing for the title of ‘Best Decorated Holiday Window’. People can vote online at InstantRiverside.com, 4 judges are also rating the windows in person. The combined scores from the judges and online viewers will be tallied up and the winner will be announced on stage at the Festival of Lights Switch-On Ceremony on Friday November 27th.

The Unsinkable Molly Brown: Friday, November 20th and November 21st at 8pm.

The Titanic may have sunk in 1912, but Molly Brown’s heroism secured her name in history and legend. At Performance Riverside, her legend lives on. Tickets are $25, $30, $37, and $43. Need to do some fall housecleaning? (Not fun, but necessary.)

A Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event is scheduled on Nov. 21 at the Pinon Flats Transfer Station in Pinyon Pines. The collection is open to all Riverside County residents.

Typical junk includes used motor oil, paint, antifreeze, household and automotive batteries, pesticides, cleaning products, sharps (needles/syringes or lancets), fluorescent lamps, and electronic wastes such as televisions, computers, VCRs and telephones. Limit the amount of waste transported to no more than 5 gallons or 50 pounds maximum per vehicle.

Event is subject to cancellation during inclement weather or for other hazardous conditions as determined by the county. The event will go from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pinon Flats Transfer Station, located at the south end of Pinon Flats Road. The nearest intersection is the Pines to Palms Highway (Hwy. 74). Looking ahead

Tickets are on sale now for the 2009 Nutcracker Tea presented by California Riverside Ballet. A downtown Riverside holiday tradition, the tea will feature a condensed and narrated performance of “The Nutcracker” in the music room at the historic Mission Inn on Saturday, December 12 at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Toys for Kids Men’s Softball Tournament

The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, the Quinto Barrio Softball League and the Arlanza Advisory Committee invites you to join the 27th “Annual Toys for Kids” Men’s Softball Christmas Tournament and Toy drive. The toys collected will be distributed to underprivileged youth this holiday season.

The tournament will be held on Saturday, December 5 and Sunday, December 6, 2009, at Bryant Park located at 7950 Philbin Ave., Riverside. The entry fee is $150.00, plus the donation of one new toy valued at $15.00 or more by each player. Tournament structure will be double elimination.
