The following information has been provided by the Redlands Police Department:
A 17-month-old boy died after he climbed into a residential swimming pool Saturday night.
Police and firefighters responded to the home in the 1100 block of Alta Street shortly after 8:00 p.m. Saturday, June 27.
The boy was not breathing when emergency personnel arrived. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly before 9 p.m.
The boy’s parents said they were with a group of children in the front yard of the home when they realized the boy was missing. They went to look for him and found him in a four-foot above-ground pool in the back yard.
Redlands Police are investigating the incident.
Pool owners are reminded that, state building codes require that all pools over 24 inches deep have appropriate fencing or safety covers. In addition access doors to the pool area must include exit alarms and self-closing and self-latching devices.
Parents are reminded that an adult should be designated to watch children and maintain constant visual contact at all times around swimming pools.
Pool owners are also encouraged to learn CPR techniques.
