An irrigation retrofit was recently completed at Polytechnic (Poly) High School. The new installation is anticipated to ultimately conserve more than 42 million gallons of water throughout the next decade.

The retrofit was a joint project of Western Municipal Water District, Riverside Public Utilities (RPU), the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and Riverside Unified District (RUSD).

For the $64,500 retrofit, Western contributed $22,250. RPU provided $10,000, and Metropolitan supplied $32,250. RPU also covered the $24,000 cost of water-use audits conducted at RUSD properties.

The water-use audits indicated Poly High School to be an appropriate location for a complete retrofit. In addition to being one of the district’s properties consuming most water for landscaping purposes, Poly was ill equipped with an outdated irrigation system.

On Aug. 26 at 9:30 a.m., the project partners gathered to celebrate the completion of the irrigation project in a “Flip the Switch” event held at Poly High.
