Passersby stop Calimesa carjacking

A man who had allegedly attempted to carjack several vehicles — and had reportedly gotten into one and attacked the driver– was captured by passersby in Calimesa on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Glen Dewitt, 24, of Yucaipa, had apparently tried unsuccessfully to enter several passing cars in the area of Myrtlewood Drive between Fifth Street and Calimesa Boulevard. When he came across an 83-year-old Yucaipa man whose window was down, Dewitt allegedly dove through and began kicking the elderly driver in an attempt to get him to leave the vehicle.

Passersby saw what was happening and pulled Dewitt from the car, holding him until police arrived.

The elderly driver was treated at a nearby hospital.

Dewitt was also taken to a hospital with injuries as well as possible drug use. Upon his release, he will be booked for attempted car jacking, felony battery and felony malicious mischief/vandalism.
