No matter which way this election goes, it’s going to be historic — mind-bogglingly historic. Be a part of it. Use your voice.
Get in line at the polls, no matter how long. Meet your neighbors. Take a lawn chair, a bottle of water and enough leftover Halloween candy to pass around if you’re afraid it’s going to be a long wait. Leave work an hour early to make sure you can get to the polls. (Just remember, so many people have already voted that the lines may not be too bad after all.)
Make the experience memorable — this will be the election you’ll be reminiscing about. Watch the results with friends. Save a copy of Wednesday’s newspaper (heck, at the rate things are going, newspapers are collectibles unto themselves).
We suspect the greatest legacy of an otherwise dismal Bush administration will be that it made people realize how important it is not just to vote, but to follow the issues and examine the candidates based on who is best for the country’s future instead of who you want to have a beer with. And that picking the best person for the job has absolutely nothing to do with race, religion or gender.
So get out there and vote. And not just once every four years — every time.
We’ll see you in line.
