Muriel May Houston, or “Murnie” to her friends, was born on Nov. 25, 1921 in Minneapolis, MN. Murnie married Paul Miller of Cleveland, OH in 1941. They moved to Beaumont in 1945 and shortly thereafter opened the Penguin Restaurant in downtown Beaumont. The Penguin was the local “hang-out” for many years.

After Paul’s death in 1967, Murnie married Don Houston, a long-time resident of Beaumont. After 29 years of marriage, Don passed away in 1997.

Murnie was a realtor in the Pass area for many years and started Beaumont Realty as the broker in the mid 1970’s. She was a member of the Pass Artists Association in the 1950’s and 60’s, a member of the Pass Historical Society and Eastern Star, and, most recently, an Ambassador for the Beaumont Chamber of Commerce. She also designed the current emblem for the city of Beaumont.

Murnie is survived by one daughter, Kathie Campbell, of Beaumont; a son-in-law, Chris Campbell of Beaumont; one granddaughter, Britany Campbell, of Beaumont; and one great granddaughter, Ella Tveito of Beaumont.

She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Polly Crook, of Palm Springs; a brother-in-law, Robert Houston, of Camarillo; and several nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her two older brothers, Rex and Eugene Crook, both of Palm Springs; and two sister-in-laws, Helen Houston of Redlands and Bernice Houston of Long Beach.
