The victory belonged to Riverside Mayor Ron Loveridge. In the absentee vote count, released shortly after 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, Loveridge had a strong lead, which Art Gage admitted wouldn’t be possible to overcome. Gage is a former member of the council, who was replaced in the previous election by Council member Rusty Bailey.

Loveridge hosted a watch party at his Riverside home, and followed election results on his computer. Both Gage and Loveridge tell InstantRiverside.com that this is their last political contest. “It is, it is. It’s time for me to turn the focus back on my own life and go back to work,” said Gage.

Both men faced write-in candidates. Troy Kent, a student at Arlington High School, qualified at the last minute. Ken Stansbury, also a write-in candidate, raised no money, and had been a one-time supporter of Mayor Ron Loveridge.

In interviews before the election Art Gage estimated he would raise $15,000, and have the help of at least 600 volunteers. Mayor Loveridge said he expected to spend as much as $150,000, in addition to have the advantage of being the well-known incumbent.
