John Lewis Hurd, 86, of Hemet, died Nov. 3, 2009, at Hemet Valley Medical Center in Hemet.
Graveside services are at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 20 at Riverside National Cemetery. Miller-Jones Mortuary in Hemet is handling arrangements.
Mr. Hurd, who was born in Huntington Park, lived in Hemet 25 years. He was a repairman for Packard Bell-Teledyne for 29 years.
During World War II, he served as a B-17 ball turret gunner in the 8th Air Force, 401st bomb group. Mr. Hurd was a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft 17-B in Austria.
He was featured in a documentary on The History Channel for having “one of the world’s most dangerous jobs” during the war and for his accomplishments.
Later, Mr. Hurd did volunteer work at Chino Airport for the Planes of Fame Air Museum.
He enjoyed building model planes.
Mr. Hurd is survived by a brother, Samuel, of Downey; a nephew, Stephen; and a niece, Trude.
