Hazel Ann Duro age 67, of the Torres-Martinez Reservation in Thermal, Calif. passed away October 7, 2009. She was born January 23, 1942 in Indio, Calif. to Saturnino and Florence Torres.
Hazel worked at the Malki Museum and Jenny Lyons Cahuilla Foods. She was a tribal member and Elder of Torres-Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians and chairwoman of Torres-Martinez Senior Program. She was a collector of native artifacts. Hazel loved Cahuilla Bird songs and dances and Dwight Yoakam.
She is survived by sisters, Rose Tortes of Banning, Calif., Theresa Torres, Charlotte Torres and Annette Torres of Thermal; brothers, Spencer (Jenny) Lyons of Anza, Calif., Arnold Torres of Banning, Calif., Stan (Lynette) Torres of Cherry Valley, Calif., Raymond (Brenda) Torres of Indio, and Willis Torres of Thermal.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Duro; sister, Wilma Torres; and parents.
There will be a Viewing on Thursday October 15, 2009 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Forest Lawn 82-975 Requa Ave, Indio, CA 92201. There will be a family lunch on Friday October 16, 2009 at 12:00 PM. There will also be an All Night Wake beginning at 5:00 PM at the Torres-Martinez Tribal Hall, lasting until 8:30 AM Saturday October, 17, 2009, a Church Service will follow at the Body of Christ Church from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM and a Graveside Service at 10:00 AM at the Toro Cemetery on the Torres-Martinez Reservation.
