A Caltrans representative says the family of Christopher Laurie has filed a claim against the agency, often a precursor to a lawsuit, following the July accident in which Laurie was killed when he drove into the back of a Caltrans vehicle in Corona.
It is unclear what the family is seeking. Laurie was the son of Harvest Christian Fellowship pastor Greg Laurie.
The California Highway Patrol originally said its report on the accident that killed Laurie would likely be completed by December. When asked in a Feb. 2 e-mail about the report, CHP public information officer Sylvia Mosley said, “Not yet, it’s a full MAIT investigation and could take a while.”
On August 29, the CHP said it would be five months before it completed its report. “When the M.A.I.T. (Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team) team gets involved, they’re very meticulous,” Mario Lopez of the CHP’s Inland Division said at the time.
The CHP’s M.A.I.T. routinely handles such investigations.
Laurie is pictured with his wife, Brittany, and daughter, Stella.
Laurie died July 24 when he slammed into the back of a Caltrans truck on eastbound Highway 91 in Corona. Laurie was traveling alone in his Dodge Magnum in the carpool lane.
The Riverside County coroner has released the autopsy results; Lt. Cynthia Mayman said toxicology reports did not reveal the presence of alcohol or illicit drugs. “The cause of death is listed as cranio-cerebral trauma — blunt-impact head injuries,” Mayman said.
