Dragon-boat racing

The following information has been provided by San Bernardino County Regional Parks:

Seeing a dragon boat out on the waters in San Bernardino County is an unusual site, indeed! Last year, San Bernardino County Regional Parks brought dragon-boat racing to Crestline and it happened again on Saturday, August 16th at Lake Gregory Regional Park.

Dragon-boat racing began in ancient China more than 2,500 years ago to celebrate the summer harvest. The elongated boats seat 12 to 20 with decorative heads, tails and painted scales. At the helm is a drummer, the “heartbeat” of the dragon boat, leading the crew through the race with rhythmic beating to indicate the timing and frequency of paddling strokes. The steerer, also known as the coxswain, controls the dragon boat with a steering oar similar to a tiller which is mounted on the rear of the boat.

San Bernardino County operates nine regional parks: Cucamonga-Guasti, Ontario; Prado, Chino; Glen Helen, San Bernardino; Yucaipa; Lake Gregory, Crestline; Mojave Narrows, Victorville; Moabi, Needles; Mojave River Forks, Hesperia; Calico Ghost Town, Yermo
