Bernice Hammerschmidt OCT. 28, 1917 ~ DEC. 9, 2009

She passed away at the age of 92, in Corona, California. Bernice was born on October 28, 1917 in Perris, California to Owen and Mildred Blagg.

She graduated from Perris High School in 1935 and San Diego State University in 1939. After graduating from college, she married her high school sweetheart, Ben Hammerschmidt, in Perris, California, and she began raising her family. Bernice played fast-pitch softball with the Magnolia Maids in the 1950’s for which she was inducted into the Riverside Sport Hall of Fame in 2009.

When her children were in school she began teaching at St. Francis de Sales School She worked for the United Way Charitable Foundation, and retired as the Program Director for the YWCA.

Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Ben, in April 2009.

She is survived by her children, Nancy Jones of Crestline, CA, Allen Hammerschmidt of San Diego, CA, Christine Hammerschmidt of Riverside, CA, Terry Hammerschmidt (Marianne) of Stevensville, MT; her grandchildren, Dan Hammerschmidt of Laramie, WY, Janelle Hammerschmidt of San Diego, CA, Jeff Hammerschmidt of Tucson, AZ, James Hammerschmidt, Justin Hammerschmidt (Felicity) of San Diego, CA; her great-grandchildren, Holly and Michael Hammerschmidt of Laramie, WY, Bryn Hammerschmidt of Tucson, AZ; her sisters, Nelle Foote of Riverside, CA, Dorothy Hardy of Golden, CO, Bea Helmick of Manteca, CA and her brother, Don Martin (Elinor) of Canyon Lake, CA.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at Magnolia Presbyterian Church, 7200 Magnolia Ave., Riverside, CA. The burial will be private. Acheson & Graham Mortuary (951) 688-1221
