AT&T crew surprised by underground suspect

An AT&T crew was surprised on Friday when they were preparing to enter an underground vault and the manhole cover suddenly lifted.

According to the Riverside Police Department, workers were preparing to go into an underground utility vault in the 1600 block of La Cadena Drive when the manhole cover came up and a “disheveled” man climbed out.

His vehicle — which bore a magnetic door sign for a utility contractor — was parked nearby.

It was then discovered that the man had cut and pulled out approximately 100 feet of telephone cable; AT&T estimated the damage at $10,000.

The suspect was booked for removing telephone wires and attempted grand theft.
