Restaurant customers help foil robberty attempt

Alert customers grabbed a bag of money from a group of robbers and tossed it back to a restaurant cashier on Monday night in Riverside.

According to the Riverside Police Department, men in the Alberto’s Mexican restaurant at 9111 Magnolia Ave.  grabbed the deposit bag from the female cashier at approximately 9:45 p.m. Customers saw what was going on and tried to help; they got the bag back and threw it to the cashier.

The suspects ran east on Magnolia Avenue; a few minutes later, an officer spotted men matching the their description leaving a parked car in a nearby apartment complex. The group ran to an upstairs apartment and turned off the lights. The officer saw a handgun on the front seat of the car and called for backup.

An adult who identified himself as the “resident advisor” to a group of young men living in the apartment arrive and let police inside; several were detained, and another was arrested for delaying the investigation.

The victim and witnesses from the Alberto’s robbery couldn’t positively identify the men.

But two adults were arrested after officers found a second gun in the car, as well as a large amount of stolen property from an apartment burglary near UC Riverside.
