An end to HOV stickers for individual-hybrid drivers to use California carpool lanes
California law currently allows High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes to be used by single-occupant cars with a DMV issued Clean Air Vehicle Sticker. There are two types of stickers: Yellow Clean Air Vehicle Stickers are available has been available for qualifying hybrids.
However, the limit of 85,000 drivers with this sticker has been reached, and no more will be issued. These stickers are set to expire on December 31, 2010. Pending legislation may extend the yellow stickers until July 1, 2011, but any new applications for the stickers will be turned down.
White Clean Air Vehicle Stickers are available to an unlimited number of qualifying Federal Inherently Low Emission Vehicles (ILEVs).
Qualifying cars are usually certified pure zero emission vehicles (100% battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell) and compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles.
The expiration of the white stickers has been extended to January 1, 2015.
