Silver Fire reaches 16,000 acres; containment at 25 percent

The Silver Fire near Banning reached 16,000 acres Friday morning, but fire officials said the blaze is at 25 percent containment.

Evacuations are still in place for Vista Grande, Mount Edna, Poppet Flats, Twin Pines, Silent Valley, Snow Creek Village, lower Cabazon and the Marion Mountain, Fern Basin and Dark Canyon campgrounds as well as the Marion Mountain and Seven Pines hiking trails. The Black Mountain and Boulder Basin campgrounds and the Black Mountain fire lookout have been closed by the Forest Service.

Highway 243 is closed between Banning and Poppet Flats. Snow Creek Road is closed at Highway 111.

Since the fire was reported on Wednesday afternoon, 26 homes and one commercial structure have been destroyed, according to Cal Fire. Six injuries have been reported, five to firefighters.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
