Toddler killed after climbing out of car seat and hit by car in Riverside

News headline from the Riverside Police Department:

2012-10-02-map-riv.JPGShortly before 2:00 p.m. on October 2nd, Riverside Police Officers responded to a condominium complex in the 2500 block of Grambling Way after reports of an injury traffic collision involving a child.

Upon investigation,officers learned that a mother and her 18-month-old son were bring dropped off at the complex by a family member.  The mother got out through the front passenger door and removed the child from the rear passenger area, while still in his child restraint.  The mother sat the child restraint down on the ground to shut the passenger doors of the Mercedes SUV.  While she was doing that, and unbeknownst to her, the toddler crawled out of his car seat.  As the family member drove away, the child was struck by the SUV and sustained major injuries.

Members of the Riverside Fire Department and American Medical Response paramedics tended to the child, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The identity of the child has not been released, pending complete family notification.

The department’s Major Accident Investigation Team responded and investigated the collision.
