News headline from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department:
At around 1:00 p.m. on October 3rd, officers from the Moreno Valley Police Department responded to a report of an unknown trouble at a residence in the 13900 block of Elsworth Street of Moreno Valley. The female caller dialed 911 and could be heard crying, but would not state what the problem was. When the officer arrived, he saw a man later identified as Cipriano Ortiz, 29, of Moreno Valley walking away from the residence.
The officer attempted to detain Ortiz in order to determine what was occurring at the home. As the officer contacted Ortiz, he became uncooperative and a physical confrontation ensued. During the confrontation the officer sustained a serious injury and Ortiz ran back into the house. Additional officers responded and found Ortiz hiding inside his residence.
Ortiz continued to resist but was ultimately taken into custody. Several concerned witnesses called 911 to report the officer being attacked and provided suspect information that aided responding officers in locating Ortiz.
Investigators were able to determine that the incident stemmed from a family dispute which was being reported by the female caller.
The victim officer and suspect were transported to a local hospital and treated for their injuries. The officer’s injuries are not life-threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery.
Cipriano Ortiz will be booked assault on a peace officer and felony child endangerment.
The Moreno Valley Police Department is asking anyone with additional information about this case to contact Investigator Rose at 951-486-6710.
