Sponsors donate gift certificates for Redlands ‘Gifts for Guns’ program

Announcement from the Redlands Police Department:

2012-09-28-gifts-for-guns.jpgAs part of a program designed to get guns off the streets, the Redlands Police Department is offering gift certificates donated by local businesses in exchange for functioning firearms.

The Gifts for Guns exchange will take place from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. (or until all gift cards have been dispersed) on Saturday, October 6th, in the city lot across the street from the Police Department at 1270 West Park Avenue in Redlands.

The Gifts for Guns program is based on a successful gun collection program conducted by law enforcement agencies throughout the State of California that has taken thousands of guns off the streets since its inception.

Redlands residents who bring working firearms, unloaded and stored in the trunk of their vehicles, will receive a gift card donated by a local business.  Non-working firearms will also be accepted, but will not qualify for a gift card.

No questions will be asked and absolutely no method of identification will be used to identify participants in the Gifts for Guns program.  No driver’s license information or license plate numbers of vehicles of those participating in the program will be collected.  All participants will remain anonymous.

Any guns determined to have been stolen will be returned to their rightful owners and all other firearms will be destroyed by the Redlands Police Department.

Sponsoring businesses include Stater Bros. Markets, Bijoux Luxury Jewelers, Caliber Collision Centers, PCH Architects, Subway, Target, Redlands Dental Group and Orthodontics, San Bernardino School Employees Federal Credit Union, Zack’s Hands Therapeutic Massage. Additional sponsors are invited to participate.
