DUI reckless driver involved in hit & run collision and police pursuit in San Jacinto

News headline from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department:

Just before 9:00 p.m. on September 5th, officers from the San Jacinto Police Department’s Special Enforcement Team attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2000 Kia Spectra after it was seen driving erratically in the area of Hewitt Street and East Evans Street in San Jacinto.  The driver refused to stop and tried to get away, running stop signs and driving recklessly at high speeds.  The suspect vehicle ran a red light and collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Esplanade Avenue and San Jacinto Street.

Because the driver’s actions were considered a threat to public safety, a police pursuit was initiated.  The suspect continued his attempt to elude officers until he eventually hit a tree in an alley in the 100 block of North Victoria Avenue.

The driver along with three other passengers jumped out of the car and ran off.  The driver was apprehended a short time later; however, the three additional passengers are still outstanding.

The driver, identified as Robert Haydon, 36, of San Jacinto, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, hit and run, felony evading a peace officer and probation violations.

Anyone with additional information regarding this case is asked to contact Officer Ramirez 951-654-2702.
