2012-08-17-map-lk-els.JPGAt around 10:15 a.m. on August 17th, officers from the Lake Elsinore Police Department responded to a single vehicle fatal traffic collision on Railroad Canyon Road between Canyon Hills and Church Road, east of the I-15 freeway near the gated community of Canyon Lake.

Investigators determined that the driver of a 2006 grey Buick was traveling west on Railroad Canyon Road and lost control of the car onto the soft dirt shoulder close to a thirty-foot drop.  The driver tried to get control of the car back onto the road, but was unsuccessful and the vehicle plummeted about thirty feet down a steep slope coming to rest in a wooded ravine.

The driver of the vehicle sustained fatal injuries.  The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Railroad Canyon Road was closed for several hours during the investigation, with only one westbound lane reported open at 4:00 p.m.  The remaining lanes will reopen later today.  The heavily traveled road is a main artery between the I-15 and I-215 freeways.

Lake Elsinore Unified School District has reported a delay in bus service due to the closure.  The affected schools include:  Temescal Canyon High School, Canyon Lake Middle School, Tuscany Hills Elementary and Cottonwood Canyon Elementary.  These schools serve students who live in Canyon Lake, Canyon Estates, Tuscany Hills, and surrounding areas.

The collision investigation is ongoing.  Anyone with additional information is encouraged to call the Lake Elsinore Police Department at 951-245-3300.
