News headline from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department:
At around 4:00 p.m. on August 9th, deputies from the Hemet Station responded to a vegetation fire in the community of Sage, southeast of Hemet and Diamond Valley Lake, to assist Cal-Fire personnel with evacuations. The fire consumed five acres and a mobile home on Louis Lane, but was quickly contained.
Firefighters initially believed the mobile home was unoccupied at the time of the fire.
At 8:05 p.m., deputies were called back to the scene when Cal-Fire discovered the charred remains of an adult near the burnt mobile home. The remains are believed to be those of a 79-year-old woman who was the sole occupant of the mobile home. Her identity is being withheld pending notification of her family.
Cal-Fire arson investigators and investigators from the Hemet Station concluded the fire was started by a maintenance man, identified as Juan Manuel Ramirez-Calderon, 38, who was hired to maintain a property adjacent to the scene of the fire. Ramirez-Calderon was burning yard debris on a property located on Taffle Ranch Road when the fire grew out of control and quickly spread to the property on Louis Lane.
Juan Manuel Ramirez-Calderon was arrested for reckless burning and involuntary manslaughter, and taken to the Larry Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.
Anyone with information about this incident can contact the Hemet Station at (951) 971-3400.
