Moreno Valley apartments evacuated after shooting suspect barricades himself inside

News headline from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department:

2012-08-09-map-mo-val.JPGAt around 12:30 a.m. on August 5th, officers responded to the 24000 block of Clover Avenue in Moreno Valley in reference to a man that had fired several rounds from a handgun into an unoccupied vehicle.

The investigation revealed that Pierre Curry, of Moreno Valley, arrived at the location as two subjects, one of them being an acquaintance of Curry, were involved in a physical altercation.  Curry proceeded to fire several rounds into the air, then turned his weapon toward an unoccupied vehicle and fired several more rounds into the vehicle.  Curry and his acquaintance immediately fled the scene after the shots were fired.

On August 8th, information was received by members of the Moreno Valley Special Enforcement Team that Curry had returned to the location looking for the other individual involved in the altercation.

Several patrol units responded, however Curry entered an apartment moments prior to the arrival of the first units.  A perimeter was quickly established, with assistance from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Helicopter, and southbound traffic on Pepper Avenue and Elm Street was blocked off.

Initial contact was made with Curry at the front door of the apartment, however he refused to step out of the apartment.  After his refusal and the possibility that he may be armed, several apartments within the immediate area were evacuated.

After several announcements were made over a public address system, Curry stepped out of the apartment and was taken into custody without further incident.

After the area was deemed to be safe, residents were allowed to return to their homes, and traffic was again allowed to travel southbound on Pepper Avenue and Elm Court.
