Man in wheelchair hit and killed by drunk driver in Hesperia

News headline from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department:

At around 9:50 p.m. on August 7th, a traffic collision was reported on Seventh Avenue and Manzanita Street in Hesperia.  Deputies determined that Rachel Walbye, 23, of Victorville, was driving her 2009 Jeep north on Seventh Avenue approaching Manzanita Street when she struck David Rivera, 40, of Hesperia, who was also traveling north on Seventh Avenue in a motorized wheelchair.

Paramedics arrived on scene and found Rivera suffering from fatal injuries.  Walbye was treated for minor abraisions.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in this traffic collision.  Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) Investigators were called to investigate the traffic collision.

Walbye was arrested and booked at West Valley Detention Center for vehicular manslaughter and bail is set at $250,000.
