Members of the San Bernardino City Council are scheduled to meet again on Wednesday to vote to declare a fiscal emergency, and authorize the city to file for Chapter 9 bankruptcy.
The council gathered on Monday, and after significant discussion from the public, the group voted to schedule another this second meeting to make a final decision.
Mayor Pat Morris has described the desperate financial status of San Bernardino as a “stain on the city,” and on Monday he reminded the council that the city did not have much time to seek the legal protections provided by bankruptcy.
City staff has advised the council that San Bernardino may be unable to pay employees as soon as August 15. At one point last week it was disclosed that a general fund bank account was down to $150,000, and that reserve money had already been spent.
