Hiking guide dies from fall during rock climbing demonstration in Idyllwild

News headline from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department:

At around 12:45 p.m. on July 24th, Riverside County deputies and members of the Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit responded to assist California Department of Forestry at Fern Valley Road in Idyllwild, regarding an injured volunteer hiking guide who fell approximately 30 to 40 feet.

California Department of Forestry’s helicopter assisted in locating and transporting the victim to the Keenwild Helitack, where she was then transferred to an awaiting Mercy Air Ambulance.  While en route to Desert Regional Hospital, the victim died from her injuries.

The victim was identified as Karen Gose, 27, of Chino.

Later reports were that Gose fell while descending down a rock face during rock climbing and rappelling demonstration.  Ironically, the area where the accident occurred is known as Suicide Rock Trail and Climbing Area in Mount San Jacinto State Park.
