Man with Samurai sword shot by Apple Valley deputy during investigation of domestic disturbance

News headline from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department:

Shortly before 11:00 p.m. on June 4th, Apple Valley deputies were called to a residence in the 15000 block of Sago Road in reference to a domestic disturbance.

Deputies arrived at the residence and determined there were two adults and two children in the home.  A deputy entered the home and made contact with a man in the living room, later identified as Frank Hudnall, 42.

Hudnall was extremely uncooperative and refused to comply with the deputy’s commands.  He continued to be uncooperative and ran away from the deputy, down a hallway and into a bedroom.  He then ran out of the bedroom with a large Samurai type sword lifted over his head and charged toward the deputy.  Reportedly fearing for his safety, the deputy fired at Hudnall, striking him in the upper body.  Medical personnel responded and Hudnall was pronounced dead at the scene.

As a result of the shooting, Homicide Investigators responded to conduct the investigation.
