Police officer witnesses hit and run in Rancho Mirage and recovers stolen vehicle

News headline from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department:

At around 3:00 p.m. on May 10th, an officer from the Palm Desert Police Department witnessed a two-vehicle traffic collision at the intersection of Park View Drive and Joshua Road in Rancho Mirage.  One of the drivers involved in the traffic collision immediately ran from the scene and was last seen jumping a wall into a nearby residential neighborhood.  It was later discovered the vehicle that the driver ran from was a reported stolen out of La Quinta.

A perimeter was immediately set up in the neighborhood.  Both air support and a K-9 unit were used to assist in the search for suspect.

The suspect, later identified as Joshua Bartel, 33, of Cathedral City, was found hiding inside an unoccupied residence in the 43200 block of Joshua Road.  Bartel had forced entry into the unoccupied residence in an effort to avoid arrest.

Bartel was taken into custody and arrested for possession of stolen vehicle, hit and run and residential burglary. He was booked at the Indio Jail.
