Officer-involved shooting of domestic violence suspect in Lake Elsinore

News headline from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department:

A Lake Elsinore man was injured on Monday morning in an officer-involved shooting.  He reportedly became violent with the officers during their investigation of a report of domestic violence.

Shortly after 8:30 a.m. on May 21st, officers from the Lake Elsinore Police Department responded to the 33000 block of Olive Tree Lane in Lake Elsinore after a call reporting domestic violence.

When officers arrived, the victim stated that her estranged ex-boyfriend had just assaulted her.  She told the officers that he was still inside of her residence, acting very agitated, erratic and made threats to harm himself.

Officers surrounded the residence and made several calls to the man in an attempt to resolve the matter peacefully.  The subject did not respond to the officers’ requests to exit the residence.  Fearing that he may have harmed himself inside of the residence, officers entered the home.  When officers found him, he reportedly became violent toward them and an officer involved shooting ensued.  One officer fired his service weapon at the subject, injuring him.

The officers immediately provided medical assistance to the subject and requested for Cal-Fire and American Medical Response paramedics to provide medical treatment.  No officers were injured during the incident.

The suspect, who was later identified as Alejandro Lopez, 28, of Lake Elsinore, received non-life-threatening injuries, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Investigators from the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit were called out and assumed the investigation.

The deputies involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave per department policy.

The investigation is ongoing.  Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Investigator Corey at 951-955-2777 or Investigator Cornett at 951-245-3300.
