John Hanner age 89, of Highland, CA, died at home, May 19, 2012. He was born May 14, 1923 in Huntington Park, CA to Raymond and Luisa Hanner.

He lived in Highland and the San Bernardino area most of his life. John proudly served his country beginning in 1938, when he enlisted in Co. M, 185 Infantry California National Guard. After the bombing of US fleet on December 7th, 1941, he joined the US Marine Corp. becoming a Paratrooper and eventually serving in the S.W. Pacific, during 1943.

He took part in the battle of Okinawa in 1945 and later, North China from late 1945 thru 1946. Honorably discharged from the Marines he continued to serve his country by joining the U. S. Army from 1946 through Jan. 1, 1965. John was a member of the Honor Guard from 1949 thru 1953 for Generals Douglas Mac Arthur, Matthew (Bunker) Ridgeway and Mark Clark.

During the Korean War he served in Japan, and Korea, taking part in General Mac Arthur’s audacious Inchon landings. He also served tours in Alaska, Germany, and Belgium. He retired from the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant Jan 1, 1965.

As a civilian he attended San Bernardino Junior College and the University of Alaska. He was a jack-of-all trades working at various points as a trailer court manager, carpenter, maintenance man, real estate investor and a security guard. John was an active member of the New Life Fellowship Church now called the Kings Gate Community Church for 27 years.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Mary Valenzuela; his brothers, Raymond and Henry of S. CA; nephew, James Matthews; sister, Teresa Lilly, and brothers Albert of N. CA and Edward of Florida.

John, beloved brother and uncle is survived by three sisters: Lydia Duncan, Margaret Clear of Washington, and Rita Hanner of N. CA; brother, Ernest of S. CA, 13 nephews and 11 nieces and 56 grand and great nephews and nieces.

A small family service shall be held at 11 AM, June 1 at the Montecito Memorial Park and Mortuary in San Bernardino, CA. A memorial is scheduled for July 14, 4 PM at the Arden Hills SDA Church.
