This weekend will begin the last phase for the widening of Interstate 215 through San Bernardino.

All lanes of Interstate 215 will be closed starting at 11:00 p.m. tonight, May 4, and will remain closed possibly as late as 6:00 a.m. on Monday.  This closure will allow crews to prepare the roadway for the next, and final, phase of widening that is expected to last one year.

Drivers traveling to Las Vegas and points north this weekend should prepare for detours and extra traffic all around the area.

Detours are expected to be marked, but drivers should come prepared with alternate routes if possible, or avoid the area entirely.

According to Caltrans, about 120,000 cars a day travel in both directions of the 215 freeway at Baseline Boulevard.

Dubbed The Big Shift, this last phase will complete the widening and reconfigure the freeway connections between the Highway 210 freeway and Interstate 215.
