News headline from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department:
At around 11:35 a.m. on May 25th, deputies from the Jurupa Valley Station’s Norco Office responded to River Road north of Bluff Street in Norco in reference to a reported traffic collision.
Deputies arrived on scene and found that the driver, later identified as Joyce Werley, 68, of Jurupa Valley, had been at the wheel of a Corona/Norco School District mid-size bus and experienced an apparent medical emergency. Riverside County Fire rescue personnel responded and transported Werley to Corona Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced deceased.
Further investigation revealed that witnesses saw the driver unconscious behind the wheel as the bus was traveling northbound on River Road. She was the sole occupant. The bus, which was not being controlled, ran into the guard rails on each side of the road several times, and then collided with the back of a pickup truck at low speed, which brought the bus to a stop. The driver of the pickup truck attempted to revive Werley until emergency services arrived. The combined rescue efforts of the other driver, deputies, and fire personnel were unsuccessful.
Later reports were that Werley, who was diabetic, suffered a condition from the disease, causing her to black out.
River Road was closed for approximately seven hours during this investigation.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Sergeant J. Woodland at 951-955-9230.
