Hemet man tries to avoid DUI checkpoint and crashes into cop; arrested for driving while impaired

News headline from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department:

During a DUI checkpoint that San Jacinto Police conducted on April 21st, a motor officer noticed a black pick-up truck in an attempt to avoid entering the checkpoint.  The truck pulled into the Firestone Tire Store at 2400 block of South San Jacinto Avenue.

The motor officer activated his emergency lights and siren as the truck pulled into a parking lot.  As the motor officer came to a stop behind the truck, the truck began to slowly back up toward the motor officer.  The officer was unable to get his motorcycle out of the way, and the truck colliding into the front of the motorcycle.  The officer was able to dismount the motorcycle just prior to impact and did not sustain any injuries as a result of the collision.

The driver of the truck was identified as Otis Gibson, 58, of Hemet.  It was determined that he was unable to see the motorcycle prior to the collision.

Gibson was arrested for driving under the influence of marijuana and was booked at Smith Correctional Facility on the charge of driving while impaired.  His truck was impounded.
