Earl Scruggs, banjo player and bluegrass legend, died of natural causes Wednesday morning in a Nashville, Tennessee hospital. He was 88 years old.

Scruggs played banjo with Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt, and his innovative three-fingered picking style brought the banjo into a leading role.

He was reportedly 85 years old when this performance was filmed.

Foggy Mountain Breakdown was a popular song from 1948, and most baby-boomers are familiar with his music in the theme song from “The Beverly Hillbillies” television show that ran from 1962 through 1971.

Funeral plans have not been announced.
