Free pet adoption events at Riverside County animal shelters, ‘Park ‘n Bark’ car show, and ‘Inkers for Animals’

Announcement from the Riverside County Department of Animal Services:

2012-03-28-pet-adoption-imagescayo55q0.jpgOn Saturday, March 31, Riverside County Animal Services is holding their Mega Match-a-Thon free pet adoption event for the first time.

“We’ve never done anything like this, to this magnitude, so we’re all pretty excited to see how it goes,” Director Robert Miller said.  “We would be more than happy to run out of pets on Saturday.”

Miller said the county is able to extend this offer after the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) awarded Riverside County with a one-time grant.  The $10,000 grant is helping to offset the adoption event, Miller said.

2012-03-28-pet-adoption-imagescanexcm1.jpgThe Mega Match-a-Thon adoption event is running at the county’s two largest shelters:  The Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley, located at 6851 Van Buren Boulevard; and the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms, located at 72-050 Pet Land Place.

Adopters must be 18 years or older and provide a valid state-issued identification.  Adopters do not have to live in Riverside County to qualify for an adoption, however adopters living in unincorporated county areas and residents of Riverside cannot adopt if they already have the four-dog limit.

The county shelters will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for the event.

In conjunction with the event at the Jurupa Valley shelter, the Inland Empire Classic Mustang Club is holding its Third Annual Park N Bark car show at the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter.

KOLA Radio (99.9 FM) is doing a live remote from the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with radio personalities encouraging listeners to come to the shelter and adopt their new lifelong pal for free.

Other animal organizations in Riverside County will also be participating in the adoption event in some fashion.

The Corona Animal Shelter, located at 608 West Harrington, is offering pets for $15.  The Corona shelter is open 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The Norco Animal Shelter, located at 98 Sixth Street, is offering dogs for a $28 adoption fee and cats for $17.  The Norco shelter is open 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Animal Samaritans is conducting its 12th Annual Walk for the Animals on March 31 at Palm Desert Civic Park, 73-600 Fred Waring Drive.  Click HERE for more information.

At the Coachella Valley Animal Campus, live music and food vendors will also be giving the shelter some fun energy.

2012-03-28-weiner-dog-races.jpgThe Coachella Valley shelter is hosting a Wiener Dog Fun Run.  This free event is open to any Dachshund owner.  The races will begin at about 10:00 a.m. and run for approximately one hour, depending on the number of participants.  Prizes will be awarded.

Wiener dog owners who pre-register their dogs will be guaranteed a spot in the races.  Pre-register your wiener dog by sending an email to Officer John Welsh at jcwelsh@rivcocha.org.  Please provide the dog’s name, sex, age, and where the dog calls home – and why you think your dog will win.

All dogs must be walked on a leash prior to the races.  Owners must have proof of current rabies vaccination to enter.

For the non-wiener dog crowd, a small-breeds-only race will happen after the wiener dogs event.  Only a select amount of dogs will be allowed to run.  This competition is also free – but dog owners must pre-register their dog by sending an email to John Welsh at jcwelsh@rivcocha.org.  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Anyone with a tattoo of a domestic pet is welcome to enter.  Registration is free and pre-registration is not required.  The only rule is that the featured pet tattoo be located in an area that can be viewed publicly by the celebrity judges.  In other words, no tattoos in non-family-friendly body areas.

The tattoos will be judged for creativity, color, ornate design, etc.  Prizes will be awarded to the top scorers.
