2012-01-21-fishing-derby01-rick-aschoff.jpgMore than 300 fishing enthusiasts were undaunted by the forecast of rain and wind as the 7th Annual Trout Fishing Derby promptly got underway at 7:00 a.m. at Rancho Jurupa Park on Saturday, January 21.

Park and Recreation spokesman, Marquese Howard, confirmed that 2,000 pounds of trout of various sizes had been planted in both of the lakes prior to the derby.

Shortly after the horn sounded to start the derby, Mira Loma resident, Rick Aschoff (pictured top right), landed his first fish.

Using chartreuse- colored-glittered Powerbait, the 3-year derby veteran’s fish weighed in at just over one pound.

With just an hour to go until the end of the official contest, Bobby Bunce (pictured bottom right with daughter, Kendall) looked like the clear winner of the $200.00 first-prize award.

Using a green Powerbait worm, the hospital laser technician landed a 10.69 pound trout and according to recreation coordinator, Eric Boor, “That should hold up to be the winner when the derby is finished.”

The derby was made possible by contributions from area sponsors, including Arlington Lanes, Nick’s Burgers, Riviera Family Restaurant and Kountry Folks Restaurant.
