On January 26, shortly before 2:00 a.m., deputies in Jurupa Valley were actively investigating reports of a small child riding a bicycle alone.
Deputies began searching the area of Jurupa Road and Camino Real in attempt to locate the child over concerns of a child being out at such a late hour.
One of the searching deputies was driving east along the 8700 block of Jurupa Road and was using his spotlight to illuminate the area when a collision occurred.
The deputy’s vehicle was suddenly struck from behind by a vehicle, which was being driven by Philip Hubrig, 36, of Jurupa Valley.
Hubrig’s vehicle was estimated to have been traveling at approximately 50 mph upon impact, causing substantial damage to both vehicles.
Neither Hubrig nor the deputy were injured in the accident.
Further investigation revealed that Hubrig was driving under the influence of alcohol.
He was later arrested and booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.
It was later determined that reports of the child riding alone were more likely to have been an adult riding a bicycle who had since left the area.
