Fugitive murder suspect arrested in Colton after high-speed chase

On January 24 at about 12:00 noon, an arrest was made in connection with the 2010 fatal shooting of Alejandro Chavez, 23 of San Bernardino.  The shooting occurred on August 7, 2010 in the 1200 block of West Rialto Avenue in San Bernardino.

The suspect was identified as Santiago Orozco, 22 of Highland.  He fled the scene and hadn’t been located since the incident.

The District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and filed one count of murder against Orozco.

Members of the Inland Regional Apprehension Team Task Force (IRAT) have been aggressively working this case in order to locate and arrest Orozco.

Information was received that Orozco was in the San Bernardino area and members of IRAT spotted him in a vehicle.  San Bernardino police officers attempted to stop the vehicle.

The suspect refused to stop and a high speed vehicle pursuit began and lasted for several minutes, going through downtown San Bernardino and onto the westbound I-10 freeway.

The suspect vehicle finally stopped near Ninth Street and Valley Boulevard in Colton, and Orozco was taken into custody without further incident.

No one was injured during the vehicle pursuit.

Orozco is currently held at West Valley Detention Center awaiting criminal proceedings.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Detective Pat Pritchett at the San Bernardino Police Department at 909-384-5600.
