Campers and tents removed from Riverside’s downtown mall

At approximately 6:00 a.m., officers contacted approximately 25 individuals who were camping in tents on the Main Street Mall.

orremove555.jpg They were told to remove their various personal items that are specifically prohibited from the mall.  This included tents, sleeping bags, blankets and tables.

The vast majority of the individuals contacted, complied with the directive to remove these items from the mall.

Three people refused to comply with the directive to remove their property.  They were taken into custody
and issued a citation for Section 9.04.400b, Riverside Municipal Code.  The property was seized as evidence of the violation.

“We are obligated to ensure the public space is maintained to allow use by all our community members.  The presence of this property limited the general public’s use of the space.  The removal was in furtherance of this goal.”, said North Area Commander Chris Manning.

Those persons contacted, who identified themselves as homeless, were afforded an opportunity to receive services from the City of Riverside Homeless Outreach Team.
