450-acre wildfire closes Highway 60 through Badlands

A wildfire in the Badlands area east of Moreno Valley shut down part of Highway 60 Saturday evening.

According to the Riverside County Fire Department, the Gilman Fire was reported at 4:01 p.m. Saturday at Gilman Springs Road. Highway 60 was closed in both directions between Gilman Springs and Jack Rabbit Trail, and the California Highway Patrol had to rescue stranded motorists. Between 8 and 9 p.m., one eastbound lane of the 60 was open, but westbound lanes remained closed.

As of 8 p.m., the blaze was at 450 acres and 35 percent containment.

Approximately 260 firefighters were assigned to the blaze; four minor injuries were reported. Authorities estimate the blaze could potentially grow to as much as 1,500 acres.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
