Candle ignites home fire in Redlands

News headline from the Redlands Fire Department:

A reported structure fire was put out by the home’s resident prior to the arrival of Redlands Firefighters late Monday night.

Firefighters were dispatched to the reported structure fire in the 1300 block of East Colton Avenue at about 11:30 p.m. Monday, August, 30. Upon arrival, firefighters found only light residual smoke in the single-story wood frame house.

The cause of the fire was determined to be a candle burning in a back bedroom that ignited some of the contents of the room. The resident used a garden hose to extinguish the blaze. Damage to contents of the room was estimated at about $10,000. No injuries were reported.

Four engines, a truck, a medic squad and a battalion chief responded, with a total of 18 fire personnel on scene. Salvage and overhaul operations and investigation took approximately two hours.
