News headline from the Riverside Sheriff’s Department:
On Friday, August 27, at 11:00 a.m., deputies from the Indio Station of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department responded to the Indio Hills area regarding a male hiker who had become lost while hiking in the desert.
The hiker, Michael Tarpey, 45, of Indio Hills, used his cell phone to call 911 and report that he was lost in the desert area, south of Indio Hills, and was feeling ill due to the extreme heat. Deputies searched the area with patrol vehicles, on foot, and from the air, with the assistance of a California Highway Patrol airplane.
After more than an hour, deputies spotted Tarpey on top of a ridge. He was suffering from heat related illnesses. A helicopter was used transport him to a local hospital.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department reminds people hiking in extreme heat conditions to bring plenty of water and wear clothing that protects them from the sun and extreme elements. People should not hike alone and should tell a friend or family member of their itinerary and estimated return time.
