Officer injured; teenager arrested in stabbing on Arlington Avenue

Officer injured in off-duty shooting, headline from the Riverside Police Department: 

At 12:18 p.m. Friday, an off-duty Riverside Police Officer witnessed an assault and stabbing in the 5300 block of Arlington Avenue in Riverside. The off-duty officer observed four male subjects involved in the altercation when the stabbing occurred. Two of the four subjects got into a gray Honda and fled from the area. The officer followed the suspects in his personal vehicle and called 911 from his cell phone.

The suspect vehicle proceeded to the 3600 block of Adams Street in Riverside where it turned into the driveway of an apartment complex parking lot. The officer followed the Honda into the complex as he waited for a police unit to arrive on scene. The suspect vehicle turned around and proceeded back towards the exit onto Adams Street. The officer got out of his vehicle and identified himself to the suspects who were still approaching him in the Honda.

The Honda failed to stop and continued towards the officer. An officer involved shooting occurred. The Honda struck the officer’s personal vehicle, the officer, and crashed into the north side wall of the apartment complex carport.  A loaded 9mm handgun was then thrown from the car by one of the suspects and later recovered at the scene. Both suspects were detained at the scene by assisting officers.

The off-duty officer and two other male subjects who were stabbed on Arlington were transported to a local hospital by American Medical Response for injuries they sustained.  The officer was later released from the hospital and the two stabbing victims are still being treated for their non-life threatening wounds.

Manuel Hernandez, 18, of Riverside, was booked for multiple counts of attempt murder.  The other occupant of the vehicle was released pending further review by the District Attorney’s Office
