“We got it back today.” That was Chuck Catero’s reaction after hearing the ‘cash for clunkers’ program would continue during the weekend. Catero is general sales manager at Fritts Ford. “We’ve had lots of calls, and lots of questions,” he said.
It’s been a blistering year for the auto industry, and the Riverside Auto Center. But the government program to encourage people to recycle their cars has resulted in increased traffic at several dealerships. After just a few days the ‘clunkers’ program was on the verge of being cashed out.
Late Thursday there was a sudden announcement that the ‘cash for clunkers’ program would be suspended. Friday morning President Obama expressed support for the program, and before the noon hour the house passed a bill to shovel an extra 2-billion dollars into the program. The clunker bailout still has to pass a senate vote.
Some dealers believe the ‘cash for clunkers’ program is too complicated. There’s no doubt that it’s revved up interest among auto consumers. “It’s a win-win situation for people who are bringing in cars that give them the extra money they need to close the deal,” Catero said.
